The Court of Appeal upholds the District Court’s judgement regarding extremely aggravated assault but finds the accused guilty also of crimes against international law

A man was charged in the District Court for extremely aggravated assault and crimes against international law in Syria in 2012. The District Court found that the accused was guilty of extremely aggravated assault but acquitted him of crimes against international law. He was sentenced to imprisonment for seven years and expulsion for life.

The Court of Appeal agrees with the District Court's judgment that the accused should be convicted of extremely aggravated assault. The Court of Appeal finds him guilty also of crimes against international law and agrees with the District Court that there was an armed conflict in Syria in early June 2012. But the Court of Appeal considers, unlike the District Court, that there was such a connection between the assault and the armed conflict that the accused is guilty also of crimes against international law. The Court of Appeal sentences him to eight years imprisonment and expulsion for life.
